Samsung AC error codes: E1, E5, E4, C4 and how to fix the control board
Samsung air conditioners (AR, Wind-Free, mini-split) display error codes that point to a precise fault. Most are repairable at board or component level rather than replacing the whole unit.
Most common Samsung codes
By fault family.
- E1 / E101 : indoor-outdoor communication error (wiring, comm board)
- E4 / E154 : indoor fan motor or its driver on the PCB
- E5 / E5xx : temperature sensor (thermistor) fault
- C4 : outdoor sensor issue
- Repeated inverter trips : IPM module on the outdoor power board
Diagnosis order
Cheapest to most expensive.
Inverter DC bus stays dangerously charged for minutes after power-off. Wait for discharge before measuring.
- Check S1-S2-S3 wiring and terminal block for communication codes
- Measure the thermistor resistance for sensor codes
- Inspect the outdoor power board for burnt marks / swollen capacitors
- Confirm the fan motor before blaming the board
Repair vs replace
When the board is confirmed faulty.
- Replace the exact PCB reference (new or refurbished)
- Component-level repair for rare boards
- Far cheaper than a new unit
